Yes, spec-fic is the most awesome genre.

End of story.

I don’t mean to bash or demean other genres. They each have their strengths, and there’s a lot of overlap between genres in terms of story elements. A mystery can also have the tension of a thriller, and plenty of fantasy books contain romance.

What does spec-fic have that other genres lack? What sets it apart?

The environment where the stories take place. Nothing is impossible. No dreams are off-limits. No questions are too bizarre. It’s a playground for the imagination.

Along with that, you get mind-bending powers, cool creatures, epic quests, futuristic technology. The list goes on.

What more could a reader ask for?

Here are a few of the top things that make spec-fic so extraordinary:

  1. Dragons
  2. New worlds and planets
  3. Knights in shining armor
  4. Teleportation
  5. Hobbits
  6. Aliens
  7. Time travel
  8. Spaceships
  9. Magic
  10. Superpowers
  11. The Avengers
  12. Robots
  13. Talking animals
  14. Castles
  15. Phasers
  16. Fairy tales come to life
  17. Quests
  18. Warp speed
  19. Portals to other worlds
  20. High-tech gadgets

Those are just a few of the awesome benefits that come with reading spec-fic. It takes regular stories and adds a cool factor, taking them from ordinary to amazing.

And making them a blast to read along the way.

What have I missed? What are some of your favorite things about fantasy, sci-fi, and otherwise cool stuff? Please share your thoughts in the comments.

    1. Spec-fic is a broad genre that encompasses mainly science fiction, fantasy, and horror. On its own, historical fiction doesn’t count, unless it includes time travel or something like that. Does that make sense?
