The Great Character Clash – Round 1

The first day of The Great Character Clash dawns bright.

From across realms and galaxies they have gathered. The few, the chosen.

A silent world greets them, holding its breath in anticipation.

One question now remains: Who will reign supreme?

Let the tournament commence.

P. S. If you’re not sure what this is, check out this post for the beautiful, magnificent explanation written by yours truly. 😛

The Great Character Clash Round 1

Huge THANK YOU!!! to everyone who contributed nominations. It was a hard task selecting the final 32, but the deed is done. For the record, these pairings were completely random.

And now, the moment you’ve been waiting for. The brackets.

HIGHLIGHTED MATCHES

Gandalf vs. Legolas

Certainly a matching of worthy competitors, each of which boast great skill and renown. It’s hard to bet against a wizard in any circumstance, but Legolas has proven his prowess time and again.

Jack Sparrow vs. Lucy Pevensie

A marquee match if ever there was one for the first round. Experts expect a heated duel, perhaps the fiercest in the entire first round. This battle will have everyone holding their breath.

Also, yes, by popular demand, Jack Sparrow managed to weasel his way into the tournament against all odds and the established rules. Then again, we know that rules are more like guidelines anyway.

Hermione Granger vs. Aragorn

A clash of wits and strength as two characters from two of the most well-known fantasy tales of all time meet head-on. Aragorn is favored, but never underestimate the cleverness of Hermione.

Moving on, here’s the sci-fi bracket.

HIGHLIGHTED MATCHES

Spiderman vs. Iron Man

Protégé against mentor. Young upstart against textbook narcissist. This is gonna be a fiery battle. The flack has already begun to fly.

Iron Man: You may think you own NYC, Spidey, but it’s game time. I’m here to take you down. Bring it!

Spiderman: At the end of the day, Iron Man is getting old, outdated. It’s time to hand off the keys to awesomeness (which he doesn’t own anyway) to a younger generation. People understand me because I’m one of them, not some billionaire loud-mouth.

Spock vs. McCoy

Two old friendly rivals meet again. Will Spock’s logic or McCoy’s passion win the day? It’s rumored they were heard arguing already.

10th Doctor vs. Han Solo

Two vastly different characters, both well-loved and gifted with vibrant personalities. One would think a Time Lord holds the advantage, but Han has a way of overcoming impossible odds.

*Iron Man bursts in and interrupts*

Who let the talking fur ball in? He’s got a sword. That can’t be legal.

And aliens. What’s that about? I nearly died trying to save our world from those rogues (remember that when you’re voting, all you people who I know love and adore me).

And for the love of goodness, what is a Puddleglum?

*Iron Man is escorted away by two officiating Bulgy Bears*

Ahem…getting back on track.

The first round is set. Now it’s up to you to determine who moves on.

How It Works

  • Voting begins today and runs through Friday
  • Voting will happen in the special Facebook group created for the tournament
  • If you don’t have Facebook (don’t worry, I won’t judge…mostly), you can vote here in the comments
  • You can vote for every matchup
  • A new round begins every Monday
  • The winner of each bracket will meet in the final to determine the champion
  • The more the merrier, so spread the word on social media, blogs, to the uttermost corners of the universe

Voting Criteria

This is easy and hard. Easy because it’s completely up to you, and hard because it’s completely up to you.

It doesn’t need to be a logic game. So you can take off your Vulcan ears now. 😉 The point isn’t to think who would win in an actual battle, but rather, who’s the more worthy character all around?

Or you can totally opt for dastardly, because Loki.

Basically, who do you like, for whatever reason, and want to move on? Simple as that.

I’m going to be posting updates on social media through the week, perhaps even commentary from some of the competitors.

Who are you cheering for? I’d love to hear your thoughts here or on social media.

  2. Waaaaahhh! How in the seven galactic realms am I supposed to choose between the 10th Doctor and Han Solo?!?!?!?!?!!?!?

    I can’t do it, I tell you! Can’t and won’t!!!!

🙂 Looks like fun, very interested to see how the voting progresses!

  3. Couldn’t vote against Kaladin or Sam, and Ten/Han is impossible also. But my other votes are as follows.

Fantasy: Reepicheep, Gandalf (with apologies to the Prince of Eryn Lasgalen), Lucy, Artemis Fowl, Aragorn, Puddleglum, Vin
Sci-Fi: Spiderman, Loki, River Song, Spock, Leia, Eleven, Star-Lord

  4. Ooh, this is so fun!! I don’t have a Facebook, so here are my votes…

Fantasy ~ Sam Gamgee, Merlin, Gandalf, Jack Sparrow, Artemis Fowl, Hermione, Aragorn, and Puddleglum.

Sci-Fi ~ Spiderman, Iron Man, Loki, Spock, Han Solo, Khan, Doc Brown, and Star Lord.

    I can’t WAIT for the competitions!! 😀

    1. Thanks for the votes, Madeline! 😀

FYI, Hermione and Aragorn are competitors, so you need to pick between them. Same with Spiderman and Iron Man. 🙂

  5. Here are my votes:

Fantasy: Sam Gamgee, Reepicheep, Gandalf, Lucy Pevensie, Artemis Fowl, Aragorn, Janner Wingfeather, and Saruman.

Sci-Fi: Spiderman, Loki, Darth Vader, Spock, 10th Doctor, Leia Skywalker, 11th Doctor, and Star Lord.

This was so hard, especially the fantasy duels! I’m so excited Artemis Fowl showed up. And Loki 😉

    1. Haha, yeah, there were some killer matchups in the first round. And it’s only going to get worse. 😉

      Thanks for voting!

  6. My Fantasy picks: Sam-wise, Gandolf, Merlin, Jack Sparrow, Edmond, Aragon, Puddleglum, Saruman.

Sci Fi picks: Spiderman, Katmiss (because underdog of course), Dr. McCoy, Han Solo, Khan, Doc Brown, Star-lord

  7. Dun dun dun! Some of these are really hard! Nevertheless, (since I don’t have a Facebook) here are my votes:

Fantasy: Sam, Reepicheep, Gandalf, Jack Sparrow, Edmund, Aragorn, Puddleglum, and Vin.
Sci-fi: Spiderman, Loki, Darth Vader (sorry River Song…), and Doc Brown. I can’t pick between Spock and Dr. McCoy and between Han Solo and the Tenth Doctor!

I’m excited to see who will eventually win!

    1. I find it amusing how many people literally can’t decide between 10 and Han.

      Thanks for voting, Abbey!

  8. Fantasy: Kaladin, Reepicheep, Gandalf, Lucy, Artemis, Ararorn, Puddleglum, Vin
SciFi: Iron Man, Katniss, Darth Vader, Dr McCoy, Han Solo, Leia, Doc Brown, Star-Lord
(Directed here by @agwerff on twitter)

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Ernest. 🙂 I appreciate the votes!

I think you may be only the third or fourth person to vote for Kaladin. It’s a shame he’s pitted against Sam, because they’re both incredible characters, but Sam is just more well known and loved.

  9. Ooooh you made it hard
Sam vs. Kaladin!? How could I ever choose!
But I did my best so here it goes,

For Fantasy: Sam Gamgee, Reepicheep, Legolas, Lucy Pevensie, Edmund Pevensie, Hermione
    Granger, Puddleglum, and Saruman.

For Sci-Fi: Spiderman, Loki, River Song, Dr. McCoy, 10th Doctor, Leia Skywalker, 11th Doctor, Ender Wiggins.
