The Marvel universe is packed with superheroes. But in my humble opinion (okay, maybe not so humble), Captain America sits atop the mountain of brilliance.
Don’t get me wrong. I love Iron Man, Thor, Spiderman, Hulk, and the rest of ‘em. If you pressed me to pick, though, I would say Captain America is the best.
Yes, I know all the superheroes boast positive traits, and that they’re upstanding characters in their own way, but Captain America is the cream of the crop.
Don’t believe me?
Here are six reasons to change your mind.
1. He’s humble
Even though Captain America has superpowers, he doesn’t let them go to his head. He’s not like Tony Stark. In fact, he’s the opposite.
It’s hard to find a superhero as humble and honest as Cap, and that makes him even more endearing.
2. He’s willing to do the right thing no matter what
A perfect example of this occurs in Captain America: the Winter Soldier. He’s working for S.H.I.E.L.D., but the organization seems to be up to some shady business. Even though they’re supposed to be on the same side, he challenges director Fury’s intentions.
Another example from the movie happens during the climax. Bucky is trapped under a steel girder. Instead of leaving him to die, Cap frees him, even though he knows Bucky will continue attacking.
3. He has a great name
This one’s obvious. If you’re named after the greatest country in the world, there must be a reason, right? He’s a symbol of what it means to be American.
4. He has a crazy-cool shield
Not even Thor’s mighty, magic-infused hammer can break Cap’s shield.
Talk about awesome.
Plus, the things he does with it are amazing. Who knew a shield could double as such an effective weapon?
5. He can crash an airplane into a field of ice and not die
I know, sounds unrealistic. Maybe that’s why I had to include it. An airplane crash is supposed to kill you.
Cap isn’t a god like Thor. He doesn’t have a nifty suit like Iron Man. He doesn’t turn into an indestructible monster like Hulk. Despite all that, he survived. Talk about tough. I’d want him on my side in a battle any day.
6. He’s relatable
At the core, he’s just an ordinary guy from Brooklyn. This is at the heart of what makes Cap so great. He starts out as a scrawny kid who gets picked on. He’s awkward around girls. He doesn’t dance.
Nothing special about him, and that’s why we have a connection with him. In many ways, he reminds us of ourselves.
Often, heroes with powers seem set apart from everyday folk like us, as if they’re on some pedestal of greatness we can never achieve. Not so with Cap.
